OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF CITY COUNCILOR ERIK BRECHNITZ (April 21, 2026) The City of Marco Island regretfully recognizes the passing of Erik Brechnitz, who served as a Council member on the Marco Island City Council until his death on April 21, 2026. Mr. Brechnitz was a long-time public servant who moved to Marco Island in 1995 after having served on the City Council in Decatur, Illinois for ten years and as the City’s mayor for another four years. Once on Marco Island, he served on the City’s Planning Board. He was then elected to the Marco Island City Council in November 2018 and was appointed by his coCouncilors to serve as Chairman four out of his nearly eight years on the dais. He also served as Chairman of the Marco Island Community Parks Foundation since January 2021. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. While we mourn the loss of Councilor Brechnitz, we will honor him by continuing the business of the City that held great importance to him. We will be forever grateful for his commitment to the City, his example of service, and his quick wit. Details regarding a memorial service will be provided by the family.
